After seven years and a national championship at Ohio State, the 54-year-old Meyer will formally announce his departure Tuesday at a news conference.

One of Ohio State's biggest commitments in the 2019 class is ESPN 300 wide receiver Garrett Wilson, the 13th-ranked prospect overall out of Texas, who said that Day's openness and coaching style were things that drew him to the Buckeyes.

Urban Meyer is stepping down as Ohio State's football coach after the Rose Bowl, according to multiple reports Tuesday morning. Urban Meyer is an Ohio State guy. Meyer fought through painful headaches and was visibly struggling during games this season, occasionally rubbing his head and bending over.

If the Rose Bowl is Meyer's final game he's going to end his coaching career as one of the most prolific coaches in college football history.

The timing of the announcement was based on recruiting, he said; it needed to be announced before the early signing period opens December 19. He not only lied to the media about his knowledge of domestic-violence allegations against now-fired assistant coach Zach Smith, he lied to Ohio State's own administration.

Meyer shocked college football by resigning at Florida after five seasons amid what he called stress-related health concerns that came to light when he suffered chest pains following the SEC championship game.

Meyer picked Florida because the Gators were better positioned to win national championships.

Meyer acknowledged the investigation was among the reasons for his decision: "The decision was the result of cumulative events".

Ohio State followed that with five straight wins, including a rout of archrival MI that gave the Buckeyes another division title and then pulled away for an easy win over Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship. Mark Richt will be 59 next season and isn't on the hot seat, but if the program stalls out in the next two years, Richt could choose to retire, opening up a spot for Meyer to swoop in. If Kelly gets the itch to pursue the National Football League in the next two years, Notre Dame's first call would be to Meyer to see if he would be interested and if his health would allow it.

Amid the scrutiny on Meyer's program, it also emerged that Zach Smith's treatment of his wife had drawn police scrutiny almost 10 years ago - shortly after Meyer first took him on as a graduate assistant at the University of Florida. But because of NCAA sanctions that had been placed during the previous coach's term, Ohio State was unable to compete for the conference title. Asked if he would definitely return to Ohio State next year, he answered, "Yes". Murphy noticed that Day was able to adjust his playcalling, rather than asking players to adjust to him, which is part of what has made him successful at Ohio State.

In April, Ohio State announced Meyer had signed a two-year contract extension that would keep him at the helm through 2022. Not every coach fits perfectly into every situation, though Meyer could probably fit anywhere.
