Bears fans should remain cautiously optimistic about Chicago's chances for the NFC North, but with games against the Rams, Packers and Vikings all on the horizon, the finish to the season won't be almost as easy as the five-game winning streak the Bears ripped off against teams like the Jets, Bills and Lions.
"We've just got to make the plays when they come our way". Odell Beckham, Jr. (three receptions for 35 yards, one touchdown) tossed his second touchdown pass of the season, a 49-yarder to a wide open Russell Shepard in the third quarter.
"I'll tell you this, though-I've said it all along-we've got a group here that's really coming".
Sloppiness won't cut it against the Rams next Sunday, so Trevathan's prediction needs to be on the nose for the Bears to bounce back with a win. Our guys are going to go back and watch the tape and say, 'Man we could have been better there. The Bears fumbled six times and lost one. Our defense is way better than the way we were.
The offensive line was slightly better than average blocking the run with three carries for negative yardage and four more for no gain, but that left 19 plays on which they made at least small creases, and Howard and Cohen were outstanding putting on a thunder (Howard) and lightning (Cohen) show.
This is not a case of some media clown claiming he knows more about offense than the head coach, and I actually understood the timeout he called setting up the Giants' field goal at the end of the first half and refuse to criticize people with hindsight.
So why did Nagy choose to stop running the football in the second half? After going over 100 yards only once in the previous four games, the Bears ran for 118 yards against the Giants, including 76 by Jordan Howard.
The Giants were then called for pass interference in the endzone before Chicago ran their own version of the Philly Special for the game-tying score.
