Asked about the trees, the wife of 72-year-old Donald Trump, President of the U.S., told the audience it was a question of personal preference.

President Donald Trump let first lady Melania Trump do the honors and light the National Christmas on Wednesday evening as some members of the Trump family looked on. Last year's decorations were a homage to Jackie Kennedy's first Christmas on Pennsylvania Avenue, which took as its theme Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker.

But this time around, she handled the flak with a grace that made her critics look small.

The White House itself has already been decorated for the Christmas holiday, with wreaths adorning the building's facade, ruby red trees, and more traditional trees on the inside.

"We are in 21st century and everybody has a different taste", she said. In real life, they look even more attractive. I hope everybody will come over and visit it.

First lady Melania Trump is calling the opioid epidemic the "worst drug crisis in American history" and says she is struck by how it has touched the lives of so many people.

Trump was invited to speak at the event by the wife of Liberty's president Jerry Falwell, Jr., who told the school's newspaper that Becki Falwell is close with Trump.

The US first lady posted a video and some photos earlier this week of the decorations, describing the residence as "sparkling". At the University, she mentioned she teaches her 12-year-old son Barron about the adverse effects of participating in cyberbullying.

"Think of this as a human story, an opportunity to save lives", Trump said, encouraging the students to change the world in opioid and drug abuse.
