Mickelson edges Woods in playoff to earn $9-million prize

LAS VEGAS NV- NOVEMBER 23 Phil Mickelson celebrates with the winnings after defeating Tiger Woods as Ernie Johnson looks on during The Match Tiger vs Phil at Shadow Creek Golf Course

Phil Mickelson Loses $200k Bet to Tiger Woods

Mickelson was one up going into the turn after Woods had three-putted the previous hole to make his second bogey of the day, but Woods did at least birdie the 11th and 12th to edge in front for the first time. Phil was so confident in his ability to birdie on the first hole, that he made a decision to wager some money out of his own pocket. But he missed a birdie putt on the first hole and will donate $200,000 to Woods' handpicked charity.

Each player birdied the par-5 final hole of regulation; Tiger made his putt then let Mickelson pick up his ball, conceding Mickelson would make it.

Mickelson made a 4-foot birdie putt on a specially set up 93-yard, par 3.

However, the mediocre golf continued as Woods hit his approach to 80 feet and Mickelson came up short in a green-side bunker. After he pitched out his third shot, Mickelson missed his long birdie putt.

Well, it's already been a pretty costly day for Phil Mickelson. that $200,000 bet with Tiger Woods didn't exactly go his way.

Woods then holed a confident five-footer for birdie at the par-five last and then gave Mickelson a generous concession, and the pair returned to the 18th tee before the advantage swung firmly towards Woods. "I did not want to have that match end on that hole", said Woods.

Mickelson took the lead when Woods bogeyed the 15th and the left-hander looked set to have a putt to win the match on the 17th when Woods missed the green with his tee shot. To be able to have just a little bit of smack talk over the coming years means a lot to me because I don't have much over him'.
