With President Donald Trump firing embattled Attorney General Jeff Sessions the day after the 2018 midterm elections, speculation abounds as to who will be selected as his replacement.

A protest in New York City drew several hundred people calling for the protection of Mr Mueller's investigation.

Trump on Wednesday named Matthew Whitaker to replace former Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Whitaker, unlike Sessions, has not recused himself from the investigation.

The comments Friday from Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., came as Whitaker's past business ties and remarks on Mueller's probe and other topics drew scrutiny from Democrats and ethics groups.

Adam Schiff, who spent the last two years playing defense as the Republican-run panel pushed back against special counsel Robert Mueller and probed accusations of Federal Bureau of Investigation misconduct, how plans to use the panel to keep watch on Whitaker. Many of them have made public statements acknowledging the importance of preserving the independence of the Justice Department and of allowing the Mueller investigation to run its course.

Whitaker's appointment "should concern every American - Democrat, Republican, liberal, conservative who believes in rule of law and justice", Schumer said.

Protesters gathered Thursday in cities from NY to California in a warning to the White House not to derail Robert Mueller's probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

"I'm extremely troubled that a change may have been made here to stop an investigation, which by all accounts is nearly complete", he said.

News of Mueller's team working up a final report is not entirely unexpected. "[Whitaker] should recuse himself because he has expressed total hostility to the investigation, he has said the investigation shouldn't go forward, and someone who's said that should not be in charge of deciding on the investigation".

What the 13-member panel, comprised of Democrats, Republicans and Independents, will find is a state that geographically favors Republicans, Lupher said.

He was paid a visit by dead-on impressions of both Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., who told him he should've ended the Mueller investigation a long time ago.

U.S. intelligence agencies have said Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election in an attempt to tip it towards Trump and away from his Democratic opponent, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Dershowitz, a Harvard Law professor emeritus and author of "The Case Against Impeaching Trump", said the petition is a bit "hypocritical", because what they really want is for Rosenstein, not Whitaker, to oversee Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe. "And my Apple Watch says I'm having a heart attack".

Likewise, as Chief, I did not know Mr Whitaker except primarily as he traveled with AG Sessions. Whitaker felt Mueller would focus on his job, regardless.

During his own Wednesday press conference, Trump said if Democrats offered an idea for middle-income tax cuts he would work with them, and said, "I would certainly be willing to do a little bit", when asked if he might consider adjustments to other tax rates.
