"At around 12 or 1 o'clock it was to the point where I was kind of singed over and leaning and Bob Cook said, 'If you don't get better, then we're going to have to make a decision on whether or not you're going to fight.' It was real close".
UFC president Dana White announced the attendance and gate figures stemming from UFC 230: Cormier vs. Lewis during the event's post-fight press conference on Saturday. Following the bout Cormier continued taunting current WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar saying, "Brock Lesnar, when you come, bring that brand new WWE title".
Daniel Cormier became the first man to successfully defend titles in two different weight-classes with a dominant victory over Derrick Lewis. The WWE superstar won the UFC heavyweight title in remarkable fashion back in 2008 in only his fourth professional fight when he stopped UFC legend Randy Couture at UFC 91.
Cormier says he wants to retire on his 40th birthday on 20 March next year, but before he does, he hopes to face Lesnar in a dream bout that would earn him the biggest payday of his sporting career.
That feeling led to some confidence from the 39-year-old Cormier, who had a statement from the octagon at Madison Square Garden for a certain fighter who will likely be his next opponent.
It was a cagey start before Cormier took Lewis down about a minute into the fight. Lewis adds that Cormier did exactly what he expected him to do, but just couldn't capitalize on it. Lewis took up mixed martial arts shortly after his release and used his big right hand to ascend to a title shot. Cormier took Lewis' back and forced the tap out via rear-naked choke. Lewis was able to get right back up, though still pressed against the cage.
