The deal is not reserved for new sign-ups, with current subscribers also qualifying for a free home speaker.

Spotify is giving some of its members an early holiday gift: The company is gifting subscribers to its $14.99 family plan a free Google Home Mini speaker, it announced Wednesday morning.

The Google Home Mini features a button to turn the mic off completely.

However, a Music Business Worldwide report in June had suggested that major U.S. labels including Universal, Sony and Warner had held up Spotify's India launch by not providing music licenses for the market. That's a handsome saving whichever way you look at it.

Of course, you can enjoy Spotify music on the Google Home Mini using your voice by saying things like "Hey Google, play Spotify" and "Hey Google, play Hip Hop music".

The answer is simple: They want to draw in people who are sort-of in the Google ecosystem, but don't likely already have a Google Home product and/or the Google Assistant in their home. Perhaps market penetration is more important than profit on a $50 Made by Google device. We even see hardware bundles from time to time that throw in little perks here and there to get you to bite. Per-month subscription costs and laziness do that job just fine.
