The shooter also was injured with multiple gunshot wounds. A victims' center with grief counselors has been set up for survivors. Two of the victims were in critical condition in the intensive care unit. It was one of the worst that I've seen.
Former Tree of Life president Michael Eisenberg told KDKA, "At 9:45 there were three simultaneous congregations' services that were being held".
Another law enforcement official told CNN at least 12 people have been shot. The Anti-Defamation League called it the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in the United States since 2014. "But they didn't and he was able to do things that unfortunately he shouldn't have been able to do".
Pittsburgh police Commander Jason Lando warned local residents, in an impromptu news conference at the scene: "Do not come out of your home right now, it is not safe". The man "was crawling and injured" when officers captured him.
"These senseless acts of violence are not who we are as Americans", he said.
A spokesman for Baltimore County police said the department has increased its patrols around synagogues and stepped up checks of similar locations. Police did not say if there was more than one shooter. "Unsafe weapons are putting our citizens in harm's way".
"There are multiple casualties".
The shooting at the Squirrel Hill synagogues is only the second shooting at a synagogue in US history, and the first that appears to have been motivated by anti-Semitic animus. "He doesn't want any of them to live", said another officer.
"Please stay away from the area and keep the congregants and law enforcement in your prayers", Wolf tweeted. Squirrel Hill is described as a largely Jewish neighborhood with numerous synagogues and schools in the area.
"Looks like multiple fatalities", President Trump reacted on Twitter shortly after 11 a.m. local time.
He added: "Beware of active shooter". If they had some kind of protection within the temple it could have been a much better situation.
"Our minds cannot comprehended the cruel hate and the twisted malice that could cause a person to unleash such awful malice during a baby naming ceremony".
