Novak Djokovic will replace Roger Federer as the world number two on Monday

October 13, 2018- Roger Federer meekly surrenders his Shanghai title in the semi finals, losing to Next-Gen star Borna Coric, in straight sets, continuing a wretched run of form (by his standards) with a 39-7 record.

Federer had suffered a shocking 4-6, 4-6 defeat at the hands of Coric denying himself a second consecutive Shanghai Masters title.

For the first time in his career, the 21-year-old reached the final of an ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai.

Djokovic, who has returned to his brutal best this season with Grand Slam wins at Wimbledon and the U.S Open, will surpass Federer as world number two when the next edition of the ATP rankings are released on Monday.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion has been imperious all week and barely offered a sniff to the 19th-ranked Croatian, a good friend and sometime-training partner.

Coric saved three match points to hold serve in the ninth game, but then Djokovic served out to clinch his fourth title of the season.

The victory means Djokovic is now just 35 points behind Nadal in the race to end the year as world No.1 and 215 points behind the Spaniard in the official rankings.

When asked if he had a message for Nadal, Djokovic said with a smile on his face: "I will leave that to your creative spirit of journalism".

Previewing the final, Djokovic said: "We can not underestimate Borna". "I am very close to Rafael Nadal in the rankings and I have put myself in a very good position for the last period of the year".

I need to look from the positive sides, and I need to take only positives from this week.' Coric feels a different person compared to 12 months ago: 'Last year in this time obviously I was really struggling. So I'm happy about that.

Djokovic dominated opponents behind his powerful serve, winning all 47 of his service games during the tournament. "Not many holes in the game in general, especially this week".

"I have been playing really well throughout my career in China". Emotionally they helped me a lot when I had the surgery. However, it all proved to be futile in the end, as the Serbian closed out the match in the following game.
