The judge replied, "You're at bond hearing court". The solicitor's office said it wanted to see Hopkin's financials before making a decision. Officials anticipate he'll be released later Friday and transferred to a detention center in Richland County, before being taken back to Florence County.

So many people came to Carraway's rural house across from a soybean field that they were parking in an empty lot next door.

The slain officer was just shy of 31 years of service with the Florence Police Department.

Three other officers from the Florence Police Department, as well as three county sheriff's deputies, were wounded. Two were released Thursday from the hospital. They also did not name him or the wounded officers, nor did they give their conditions.

Florence Police Chief Allen Heidler said Thursday at a news conference that about a half-hour passed between when the officers were shot and when they were recovered with an armored vehicle. As the barrage of bullets kept coming, he and his colleagues had to be rescued.

WBTW-TV reports Judge Tommy Mourounas denied bail for Frederick T. Hopkins, who needed help getting in and out of the courtroom and appeared dazed and exhausted. "As soon as they got there, the ambush was in place".

A public viewing of his body will be held Monday. A candlelight vigil was held Thursday night at First Baptist Church in Florence.

A Vietnam veteran and disbarred lawyer, Hopkins has had several encounters with the law in recent years, including a 2014 incident involving disorderly conduct.

Military records obtained by The Associated Press show Frederick Hopkins served 11 years, including time in Vietnam after joining in 1966.

Chief Deputy Glenn Kirby of the Florence County Sheriff's Office also said that a 20-year-old man in the home was wounded, according to WBTW. At that point, officers believe the firing began from inside the home.

Authorities said the shootings happened in Vintage Place, an upscale neighborhood west of the city.
