Following Sunday's practice, head coach Jay Gruden said he wasn't looking for a starter, but rather he wanted more depth at the position.

Running back Adrian Peterson will sign a one-year contract with the Washington Redskins, he told ESPN's Josina Anderson on Monday. In another move, Washington also signed running back De'Veon Smith and waived tackle Cameron Jefferson, designated as injured. Rookie Derrius Guice was lost for the season because of an ACL injury.

The organization also hosted former Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles and former New York Giants running back Orleans Darkwa for workouts but didn't sign either player.

"We want to bring them in to get physicals on them just in case", Gruden said, when specifically asked of Charles and Peterson. If he's at his best he gives the Redskins a homerun threat to pair with Chris Thompson, Robert Kelley, Samaje Perine and perhaps Kapri Bibbs.

Peterson, who was suspended in 2014 after he was charged with child abuse, ranks No. 12 on the NFL's all-time rushing list with 12,276 yards.

As it stands, Peterson will be that guy, and will have two preseason games to acclimate himself.

Although the former Vikings superstar averaged a paltry 3.4 yards per carry last season, he broke the 130-yard mark twice in six games as Arizona's bellcow. "I've seen guys come through that door and guys go through this process". As a receiver, Peterson caught 11 passes for 70 yards combined last season. In 2012, Peterson rushed for 2,097 yards - second most in a season after Eric Dickerson.

Running back Adrian Peterson is set to join the Redskins.

Washington opens the regular season on the road against Peterson's former team, the Cardinals, on September 9. He didn't. Some things are just always with you.
