On the day he was consigned to flames in a State funeral in the national Capital, the Bharatiya Janata Party Government in Uttar Pradesh announced that the late Atal Bihari Vajpayee's ashes would be immersed in rivers in all the districts of the state.

Foster daughter Namita Kaul Bhattacharya lit the pyre as cries of "Atal Bihari Amar Rahe" reverberated.

Describing former prime minister's death as a "huge personal loss", Singh said he was pained beyond words at the demise of Vajpayee, who had cherished the ideal of a developed and powerful India.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, one of India's most charismatic leaders who led the nation through several crises and held together a tenuous coalition with his inclusive politics, died on Aug 16 in New Delhi. Chief ministers, including Yogi Adityanath, Nitish Kumar, Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Vijay Rupani also attended the funeral.

Top Indian politicians, including Rahul Gandhi of the opposition Congress party, and South Asian leaders including Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, also attended the cremation.

"#AtalBihariVajpayee was one of India's great leaders - saddened by his passing and my thoughts are with his family and loved ones". The country bid farewell to its political icon amid a light drizzle. The former premier was being treated at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi where he was admitted nine weeks ago. Then, in sultry weather conditions, thousands walked along, showering petals on the carriage. They were accompanied by Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M. Thambidurai, Ministers and other leaders.Mr. Stalin too reached New Delhi to pay his last respects. Heavy security was deployed along the route of the procession.
