Jurgen Klopp: No one expects more of us than ourselves

"We know about our expectations and we know there is a really positive atmosphere around us in the pre-season - that is good". That's the only thing that I wanted to say: we can not be anything different from the challenger because we didn't win anything since I am in anyway, [and] it's a long time ago. We have to invest more, we have to fight more, we have to create more. "Joel did yesterday parts of training like Joe did - we will see how they are today". We are a team already, I can feel that. West Ham for sure will play a good season but they are not United or City, that's how it is. The challenge now is whether they can take the extra step and secure silverware.

"We knew before the game that our start was very hard", he said.

Both of these teams came in to the game with bags of confidence off the back of impressive pre-season preparations, with both also adding several new additions to their squad over the summer. Another season without silverware could see the end of Klopp. You can not create that situation, that's what I mean when I said you can not test the test before you have the test. The only problem was, Mane was clearly offside, and by the looks of the footage, the linesman had a pretty good view of the incident. Arguably the favorites to dethrone Manchester City as champions, Liverpool kick-start their pivotal Premier League campaign against a newfangled West Ham side, managed by former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini.

A summer splurge upwards of £170 million has thrust Liverpool into the spotlight with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho predictably among those suggesting that they "must" win trophies this season following such lavish spending.

A recent survey revealed Liverpool were the Premier League's unluckiest club last season, with decisions costing them 12 points.

Replicating the 44-goal haul which heralded Salah's debut season at Anfield has not fazed the Egyptian despite an early Champions League final exit and similarly fruitless travails with his national side as they mutedly exited the World Cup group stages.

"We know the expectations; we have expectations as well", said Klopp.

'He can play different positions, obviously, but I think this is best for the moment. To be a Liverpool player you need special qualities as a person, as well as the ability - they have this!

However on the flip side, many of our new acquisitions are still unproven in the Premier League, so I think it would be a bit premature to say it has been an outstanding window.

There were components to Pellegrini's set-up that looked promising at times in the first half and Marko Arnautovic wasted two decent chances, but the manner of their defending and their approach play in attack will be a cause for concern even after only one game.

19' - GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 West Ham.
