Football stars pause from World Cup to reach out to Thai team after cave rescue

A former Croatian soccer player himself, Dalic, knows just how important a World Cup victory would be for Croatia, a team which has made it to the final round 5 times, but has never won.

While going to 30 minutes of extra time in all three of their sudden-death matches - not to mention emotional energy-sapping penalty shootouts in two - has proved beyond doubt Croatia's resilience, it has taken its toll.

To celebrate the unprecedented win, the entire Croatian cabinet swapped their usual formal dress for football jerseys during their session in the Croatian capital the following day.

Self-confessed football fan and president of the FA Prince William, 36, shared a rare personal message on Twitter last night after England narrowly missed out on a spot in the 2018 World Cup final.

Croatia - the first team to earn three comeback wins in the knockout stage of a World Cup - will play in its first final. "But we have overcome so much adversity in this World Cup that it would be hard to bet against Croatia".

"We were louder, they were carrying us, they picked us up when we were not in control of the game", Dalic said of the supporters. "But from the second half onwards we played much better, and we showed our real standard", said Perišić.

"The only thing that stands in our way of achieving the World Cup is France, again" said Ivan Skoko, 25, who was born in Canada but lived in Croatia in 2014.

In Semi-finals, Croatia came from behind to win 2-1 against England, with Mario Mandzukic claiming the victor in the 109th minute after Ivan Perisic had earlier cancelled out Kieran Trippier's free-kick opener. I can not lie that when we beat Germany we thought that was the final.

"I can be very happy with my life", Dalic said, adding that "without strong faith and that motivation, it would be very hard to achieve it".

The World Cup fever has truly gripped Croatia with the country making its first-ever entry in the World Cup final. Before the tournament started, there were doubts over us.

"We have to stay like we are, not think that we are the favourites".

Dalic was only appointed as Croatia coach towards the end of their qualifying campaign, leading them to Russian Federation via a play-off win against Greece.

The Spurs defender was mobbed by teammates and the thousands of England fans in attendance at the Luzhniki Stadium erupted. However, Croatia's Ivan Perišić levelled in the 68th minute. They just kept coming towards me and they fell on me.
