The head of the Revolutionary Guards said on Thursday their forces were ready to block the strait, which links the Gulf to the Arabian Sea.

Iran is continuing to export oil despite USA attempts to prevent them from doing so, and there is no reason to think they're suddenly going to commit a series of acts of war in the Strait of Hormuz just to give the U.S. a pretext to attack them.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani had Thursday told French President Emmanuel Macron by phone that the European offer of economic measures did "not meet all our demands", Iran's state news agency IRNA reported. Washington has since told countries they must stop buying the OPEC producer's oil from November 4 or face financial consequences. It has been putting pressure on its allies ever since, seeking in particular to make them reduce oil imports from Iran.

"We are hopeful that this plan expressed by our president will be implemented if needed".

In response, US Navy Central Command spokesperson Bill Urban said that US ships were ready to fulfill their mission to "provide and promote security and stability in the region".

Asked what would be the U.S. Naval Forces reaction if Iran blocks the Strait of Hormuz, he said: "Together, we stand ready to ensure the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce wherever global law allows".

The strait is the most important oil transit channel in the world, with about a fifth of all oil consumed globally passing through on tankers every day, Reuters reports.

"If the process of the European foreign ministers' meeting in Vienna, which is aimed at encouraging Iran to cooperate, is promising, we will continue our cooperation", he said.

Trump also said he would reinstate sanctions on Iran and impose "the highest level" of economic bans on the Islamic Republic.

The pillars of the European Union's strategy are: European Investment Bank lending, a special measure to shield EU companies from U.S. secondary sanctions, and a Commission proposal that EU governments make direct money transfers to Iran's central bank to avoid United States penalties.

Rouhani warned on Wednesday that Iran could reduce its co-operation with the United Nations nuclear watchdog if the deal collapses.

"The participants recognized that, in return for the implementation by Iran of its nuclear-related commitments, the lifting of sanctions, including the economic dividends arising from it, constitutes an essential part of the JCPOA", Mogherini told reporters after the meeting without taking questions.

Besides, Commander of the IRGC Quds Force Qasem Soleimani on Tuesday lauded Rouhani for responding strongly to a USA plan aimed at blocking Iran's oil sales, saying "this is the Dr. Rouhani we used to know and the one he should be".

"Unfortunately the proposed package lacked operational solution and specific method for cooperation, and featured just a set of general commitments like the previous statements by the European Union", the Iranian leader was quoted as saying on his official website.
