"The corrupt regime is coming to its end", Lopez Obrador, a 64-year-old commonly known as AMLO, said at his final campaign event Wednesday.
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between Canada, Mexico and the United States is also a key factor in future global relations. "There is much to be done that will benefit both the United States and Mexico!"
Lopez Obrador has said he will root out corruption and grant amnesties to certain criminals amid an intense wave of violence in Mexico.
"We are going to achieve a peaceful transformation, without violence", Obrador said. We are always going to seek for there to be an agreement.
Mexico has elected a new president - Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador or AMLO for short.
"With just over half of votes counted on Monday, Lopez Obrador had about 53.7 percent of the votes, a remarkable margin not seen in the country for more than three decades".
Both of Lopez Obrador's opponents in Sunday's vote - Jose Antonio Meade, of the ruling PRI party, and the PAN Party's Ricardo Anaya - wished him success "for the well-being of Mexico".
The former Mexico City mayor, who has held double-digit leads in polling for months, campaigned on increased social spending and opposition to private investment in the country's energy sector.
"The people will protect me", Lopez Obrador told reporters who asked about the lack of security. In fact, in the eyes of many Mexicans, Mexico has been too respectful.
He said contracts obtained under energy reforms passed under President Enrique Pena Nieto will be scrutinized for any corruption or illegality, but otherwise contracts will be honored.
During his meeting with Pena Nieto, the first since Sunday's election, Lopez Obrador said they had agreed to work jointly on talks with the United States and Canada to reconstruct NAFTA, maintaining the current negotiating team while also including Lopez Obrador's picks for handling future talks.
Lopez Obrador has promised to stop corruption in Mexico's government. "But it has to be made clear that he has to deliver what he promises and not become like the rest", he said.
According to the latest census figures, there are a little more than 26,000 people of Mexican descent living in Alaska. "We are overweight local currency government bonds and the Mexican peso". But if the new president can create more economic opportunity in his country it could help stem migration to the U.S. Lopez Obrador's tall promises are also tempered by a degree of realism - he has said he will continue to negotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.
"We are actually quite optimistic about the outcome of the election", said Paul Greer, a portfolio manager at Fidelity International.
Lopez Obrador also spoke of reducing Mexican immigration to the United States through economic development.
"Now that he has won, he can not fail this new generation that believes in him", said Mariano Bartolini, a 29-year-old lawyer who voted for Lopez Obrador in the northwestern city of Rosarito, near Tijuana.
He contrasted the US immigration laws with "Mexico's very strong immigration laws".
Carlos Urzua, Lopez Obrador's pick to be his finance minister when he takes office on December 1, told Reuters on Monday that the new government will aim to reform the pension system and to reduce costs at Pemex during its six-year term.
