The Chinese company has now announced 'OnePlus Software Maintenance Schedule' programme guaranteeing platform updates for two years and security patch updates for three years. After the two years, the phones will receive an additional year of security updates that will arrive every two months. OnePlus confirmed that it would provide two years of regular software updates from the release date of the phone including new features added by Google, Android versions, Android security patches and bug fixes. In addition to the 24-month support, the company will provide one-year extended support to provide Android Security Patch updates once every two months for the devices.
The OnePlus Software Maintenance Schedule goes into effect right now and applies to the OnePlus 3/3T, 5/5T, 6, and all future phones. This means the OnePlus 6 smartphone will be supported till 2021 with Android security fixes at least.
The OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T smartphones were released back in 2016, and they've now completed a two-year period. On the whole, OnePlus is stopping the OxygenOS Open Beta development for the OnePlus 3 and 3T. For instance, OnePlus 5, which made its debut in June 2017 five months before the OnePlus 5T, will be part of the same software upgrade cycle as the latter.
This is a great move from OnePlus not just the length of the support (only Google promises more), but that theres an official schedule at all.
Have you chosen a OnePlus phone because of the firm's past record with Android updates?
Not a lot of smartphone OEMs bother with regular and timely software updates for their devices.
On a related note, OnePlus also announced that the Open Beta program for the 3 and 3T will be ending this week.
