Rare is it for a lead actor to be earmarked before the creative chair is even assumed, but Leto has the pedigree to play the role, having acted in 2016's Suicide Squad as the Joker.

According to Deadline, Jared Leto is set to the character Morbius in a Sony spinoff of the Spider-Man Universe.

While there are various versions to Cheetah throughout comic book history, the buzz is Wigg will play Minerva as an anthropologist who gets transformed into Cheetah in a ritual in the lost city of Urzkartagan. Gal Gadot returns to reprise the titular character, along with Chris Pine and Games Of Thrones actor Pedro Pascal.

Morbius: The Living Vampire battled with Spider-Man on numerous occasions but over the time he became a slightly heroic figure in his own right.

Plus, Leto is now on tour with Thirty Seconds To Mars in North America in support of the band's latest album, America. As Variety reports, Safe House director Daniel Espinosa will helm the project. The character was a scientist who tried to cure himself of a blood disease, and is so often the case, things didn't exactly go as planned, resulting in the vampire-like Morbius villain and Spider-Man rival.

There's no date attached to Morbius yet, but production is set to start later this year with a screenplay by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. He first appeared in 1971's Amazing Spider-Man No. 101 - the first issue not written by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee. It will follow both Venom in October and Spider-Man: Far from Home, which is to premiere next year.
