Google confirmed the outage to TechCrunch, though said it was only affecting a subset of users.
This has been going on for about an hour now and there is no estimated time for a fix from Google as of yet. If you can't wait that long, the company also points to where you can go for a faster resolution. If you would like an immediate fix please follow the directions to reboot your device.
Affected Google Home and Home Minis respond with "Your Google Home is not set up yet" immediately after saying "Hey, Google" or "Ok, Google" whereas Chromecasts aren't showing up as devices you can cast to within your favorite apps. Google added that users would need to reboot their device to get "back up and running", pointing users to a help page on how to reboot their Google Home device.
Those complaining to the Made By Google account on Twitter have been advised to reboot their smart speaker and their WiFi router. "We are really sorry for the inconvenience and are taking steps to prevent this issue from happening in the future".
In the case of Chromecast, users on the Chromecast Product Forum noticed the problem in the wee hours of the morning today - noting that Chromecast icon disappeared from streaming app like Netflix, HBO and YouTube. In the meantime, leave your Chromecast turned on so it can automatically perform an update once the fix for this was released.
Another said: "Can we get some info on what's going on?"
Both Google Home and Chromecast rely on pulling content from the cloud to work.
Google was inundated with complaints from people about the issue in New Zealand, Spain, Ireland, India and Argentina.
