Police officer lauded for saving toddler on Illinois highway (video)

Dash cam video captured the incident along Route 59 in Naperville, Ill., last month that earned Sgt. Anthony Mannino the Life Saving Award.

Police Department officer was honored for rescuing a toddler running alongside a freeway last month.

Cars continue to drive by in the left lane as the scene unfolds.

Mannino was presented his department's lifesaving award on Thursday, the department said.

"I have twin boys, and there's not a day that goes by where something bad happens, you always think of your own kids", Mannino said. She told the sergeant he had made it about two blocks from their home before he was saved by the quick-thinking cop. He then chased the boy down, even as the 1-year-old continued running. The 1-year-old was running alongside traffic, including large trucks whizzing by at risky speeds.

Mannino alerted dispatch that he caught the boy and would begin the search for his parents, according to the Naperville Sun.

An Illinois police sergeant is being hailed a hero after rescuing a young child who "escaped his mother's watchful eye".
