On Sunday evening Kim met with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
"We have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World", Trump tweeted from Air Force One en route to Singapore, predicting that counterpart Kim Jong Un "will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before".
Trump in May briefly scrapped the summit with Kim, only to later reinstate the meeting after meeting withNorth Korea official Kim Yong Chol.
Now, both sides appear prepared to let Tuesday's historic face-to-face between the sitting leaders of the USA and North Korea function as more of an ice-breaker (and photo op) than a high-stakes diplomatic showdown.
As anticipation for his historic summit with North Korea has ratcheted up, salesman in chief Donald Trump has done something out of character: ratcheted expectations down.
Instead of flying the Pyongyang-Shanghai-Singapore route that takes around six-and-a-half hours but passes over sea, Kim Jong-un flew via Beijing, which took around 10 hours.
Trump thanked the prime minister for Singapore's efforts to host the summit, the first-ever between a sitting United States president and a North Korean leader, at a hotel on the city-state's resort island of Sentosa on Tuesday. Trump and Kim planned to meet one-on-one for most of an hour- joined only by translators.
Trump and Kim may well end up branding tomorrow's summit a success.
Pompeo has not said if Trump would consider withdrawing almost 28,000 USA troops from the Korean Peninsula.
"I can only say this", Pompeo said.
"If diplomacy doesn't move in the right direction, sanctions will increase", Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says. And the maximum, I think you know the answer to that.
Trump landed in Singapore a little after 8:30 p.m. local time for the highly-anticipated meeting with the North Korean leader, which is set to take place on Tuesday.
Later, Pompeo shared a picture of Trump speaking with the staff of the U.S. Embassy in Singapore.
Experts believe the North is close to being able to target the entire US mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the USA and the North.
The summit's venue is the Capella hotel on Sentosa, a resort island off Singapore's port with luxury hotels, a Universal Studios theme park and man-made beaches. Trump had previously said the talks might extend beyond the first day.
"North Korea has its own royal lineage - the Kim family - and so it is natural that Kim Yo Jong traveled to Singapore separately from her brother", Christopher Green, a North Korea researcher and Sino-NK editor, told NK News on Monday.
