Muguruza thrashes Sharapova to reach French Open semi-finals

French Open- Wednesday Schedule Muguruza Sharapova and Nadal-Schwartzman

French Open 2018 results: Maria Sharapova falls to Garbine Muguruza; Simona Halep rallies to win

Muguruza will face world No.1 Simona Halep, who got the better of Angelique Kerber over three sets.

Muguruza's last stand came at 4-all in the second set, a 13-minute game in which she held three break points.

Backed by fans who loudly chanted her first name between games, Halep went ahead 3-0 with the help of only one victor. In the victory, Halep won 61 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points.

In Thursday's other semi-final, US Open champion Sloane Stephens will take on fellow American and close friend Madison Keys who she beat 6-3, 6-0 in the final in NY last September.

In short, the market has been convinced that Halep is the better player throughout this event, but yet has ditched her for this particular match-up, and it's hard to understand why.

Spain´s Garbine Muguruza (R) is congratulated by Russia´s Maria Sharapova after winning, at the end of their women´s singles quarter-final match on day eleven of The Roland Garros 2018 French Open on June 6, 2018. "I just went and searched for her in the training room", Stephens laughed in her press conference following her quarter-finals.

The second semi-final today sees a repeat of last year's US Open final between Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys, where Stephens blitzed her American counterpart.

Her victory over third seed Muguruza also means she will retain the world No. 1 ranking next week.

Keys made it to the semis with a straight-sets win over Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva while reigning US Open champion Stephens eased past Russia's Daria Kasatkina. Rafa Nadal goes in search of his 11th French Open title but don't count out Novak Djokovic - and what about the in-form Alexander Zverev? It's just how it's happened for me", Stephens said, "I think once I get going in a tournament, I'm pretty consistent, which is good.

"I mean, it's not that important, because it's constantly this thing going on, you know. since previous year", she said after a crushing 6-2, 6-1 last-eight victory over Maria Sharapova in Paris. Del Potro got back to the semifinals in Paris for the first time since 2009.

"But to have had the victories that I have had, to have the results that I have, obviously moving a step in the right direction. It's a nice opportunity, a big challenge, so I have just to feel happy after the match that I gave everything". "I think Serena hated me for being the skinny kid who beat her, against all odds, at Wimbledon", Sharapova wrote.

Such impressive data from this match has led to Muguruza being chalked up as a [1.89] favourite over Halep, and I want to discuss why I think this is an utterly freakish line.

But Keys, who made 23 unforced errors in the first set, hit back hard and set up a break point at 3-2, only for Stephens to save it with a service return victor. Halep managed to win despite 46 unforced errors and being broken four times.
