According to director Knight, Bumblebee will carry a tone distinct from the other Transformers series installments - and the teaser trailer proves that, showing off the sweeter, gentler, coming-of-age-story side of the franchise.
Jessica Chobot was joined by Nerdist News writers Aliza Pearl and Joey Clift, as well as video editor Adam Murray on today's trailer round-up show, and they started with the trailer for Bumblebee.
Now we're getting our first look at Bumblebee and John Cena as well.
This time around, Bumblebee's vehicle mode is an original Volkswagen Beetle, just like in the cartoons. But what fans might not have seen is the inclusion of another Transformer: the treacherous Decepticon himself, Starscream, who might be the big bad of the movie. It also further evokes the film's nostalgic approach to the Transformers franchise.
Written by Christina Hodson (scribe on the upcoming Birds of Prey), Bumblebee co-stars Pamela Adlon, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Rachel Crow, and Jason Drucker in the human department. In the lead is Hailee Steinfeld as Charlie Watson, a young woman who forms a friendship with the rusted Transformer when she discovers him in a junkyard.
The trailer leads with Charlie (Steinfeld) finding a yellow VW Beetle in a junkyard as a familiar quote echoes, reminding us that the driver doesn't pick the vehicle; the auto picks the driver.
The spinoff will hit theaters in December.
