"Nothing felt good coming out of my hand", Pomeranz said. "I've always played video games, played it with my teammates in the offseason, at the field, at the hotel".

But Maile made up for that gaffe, smacking his timely homer off Boston's testy-lefty Chris Sale in the seventh inning that knotted the score at 3-3 and set the stage for his late-game heroics. He was sent back to Boston for a battery of medical tests and diagnosed with a mild case of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Drew Pomeranz wasn't sharp in this one, giving up three runs on five hits and five walks over just four-plus innings of work. He struck out four and walked three.

Sale, who threw 85 of his 116 pitches for strikes, seemed to be in control at that point.

The Red Sox ended up scoring another run in the eighth for the 5-3 win. "And he competed. That's all we wanted from him".

The Red Sox have hit 19 home runs in their last 10 games. "That was good to see".

Gibbons then bristled when asked if there was a chance he would go with McGuire or Gaviglio if another spot start is needed for Stroman.

Boston are 25-10 in their last 35 overall and are 14-6 in their last 20 road games and are 37-18 in their last 55 games on astroturf.

Manager John Gibbons shared a similar sentiment.

That's when Sale asserted his dominance, recording three groundouts in the third and fanning six straight to get the side in order in the fourth and fifth.

Maile's single to center gave the hosts a 2-1 lead, and the Blue Jays looked on their way to a decent offensive night against the left-hander. He's 12-1 in 17 starts at Rogers Centre, including 8-0 in 11 starts as a visitor. He was acquired from Cleveland in a trade last week and started at shortstop.

But despite the loss, Estrada said he was content with his pitching. "I like the mound". I truly believe that we have five guys who can take the ball and get a win each and every time.

Smoak led off the sixth with a solo shot off Price to make it 4-2. The homer was Smoak's first since April 30 at Minnesota.

Ryan Tepera pitched a flawless eighth for Toronto, and Tyler Clippard did the same in the ninth. As of this writing, 67% of the betting tickets wagered at online sportsbooks are on the Red Sox to beat the Blue Jays on the moneyline. With two outs and a man on first, Russell Martin doubled down the left field line. After police and security staff escorted the fan out the gate in right field, Cora came out to make the change. It also catapulted the game into much unwanted extra innings and more exposure for the Sox bullpen, which had been run over by the Yankees for three days.

"I thought I threw the ball pretty well", the 34-year-old said. "If we're going to go, we'd better be safe. He'll be out there tomorrow".

"It feels like it's usually a home run that kinda kills it for me", Estrada said.

Before the game, the Blue Jays put right-hander Marcus Stroman on the disabled list with shoulder fatigue and optioned left-hander Tim Mayza to Triple-A Buffalo. He threw a bullpen session Thursday and he was declared fit to start Saturday in Toronto.

Red Sox right-fielder Mookie Betts showed off his defensive skills in the bottom half of the fourth running down a Richard Urena fly ball and making a diving catch just in front of the wall in foul territory.

But it was also his third non-quality start of 2018 for the Jays after going 3-13 as a starter in Toronto previous year with a 5.34 ERA. Biagini made two starts against the team in 2017, putting together a 0-2 record in 2017, posting a 0-2 record with a 7.53 ERA.
