Top English club names former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrad as manager

Paul Murray and Rangers chairman Dave King

The arrival of the former England captain will restore some star power to a league that has found it increasingly hard to attract and hold on to top players against the booming television revenues of the Premier League. "Whether Rangers is a good first step or not, is not for me to say or not for me to judge". Good football players can be good managers, exceptional managers are sometimes not good players. There will be lots of scrutiny, but that's what I love.

But there is a risk Gerrard shoots his managerial ambitions in the foot straight away by choosing the wrong club at the wrong time. I didn't enjoy the result from a Rangers point of view but I've been here and sampled the atmosphere before.

"I admire his courage, a huge challenge, at one of the two most important teams in Scotland".

'If I didn't have confidence in myself and my staff and the board I wouldn't have come here. I had a different feeling in my stomach about the other opportunities I had to be a manager.

"I think the challenge is a lot". I think he will take it on and he is joining a great football club with big traditions, big support in a great city. But the key was the opportunity.

"When the call came it was a no-brainer for me".

And King can not think of a bigger name who has been lured north of the border.

Chairman Dave King said: 'We are delighted to confirm today that Steven Gerrard will become the next manager of Rangers. "But me and Brendan are fine, we always have been fine, and I'm looking forward to the challenge". Good football players can be good managers, exceptional managers are sometimes not good players.

There has been no shortage of pundits who have been ready to question the wisdom of Gers appointing a rookie boss.

Having worked as a coach with Liverpool's youth system over the course of this season, Gerrard has signed a four-year contract at Ibrox, starting on June 1. The same goes with BT and I have to respect a couple of commitments I have with them. I think until you do it, you don't know exactly what it's like. The target is to win games.
