Ford Mustang heads to Nascar in 2019, remains best-selling sports coupe

Ford Says The Mustang Was The Best Selling Sports Coupe Of 2017

Ford Fiesta ST to join NZ line-up

"I think this is good timing for us, especially as we look at how Fusion is still performing with four race wins so far this year early in the season, that we felt we didn't want to bring out a new vehicle until we knew we could do it right and make a good step forward", he said.

Nobody really saw this coming, but even as sports cars have been eclipsed in popularity by SUVs and pickup trucks, an iconic American set of wheels has been the bestselling global 2-door thriller for three years in a row. The fun-to-drive, dynamic and innovative hot-hatch will arrive in local showrooms in the second quarter of 2019 to join the Ford Performance line-up, alongside the new 2018 Ford Mustang and first-ever Ranger Raptor.

The build will be executed by Ford's two strongest Supercars teams, DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing.

The announcement confirms the Ford brand's return to active involvement in the sport after it withdrew its support from Supercars in late 2014.

If you're wondering what the most popular trim is, it's the Mustang GT with its 5.0-liter V8. Indeed, it was only with the arrival of the 2015 Mustang that the automaker announced it would be shipping the vehicle to Europe and Asia.

"We have racing in our DNA and we have performance in our DNA", said Mr Whickman.

"The Mustang nameplate is one the of the most legendary in the world and we are proud to have it lining up on our grid in 2019", Mr Seamer said.

Ford Mustang is available as convertible and as fastback.

"We're in partnership", said Mr Whickman, who declined to specify how long the deal would extend for.

The new Ford Mustang will make its Aussie debut at the Adelaide 500 in March next year.

Both racing outfits are understood to have already undertaken exploratory mechanical and aerodynamic research on the Mustang, which will require significant body modifications to fit over the control Supercars platform.

Their existing 5.0 litre V8 engines run in the Falcon will be bolted into the new 2-door race auto due for development over a controlled Supercars chassis.

Mustang's new 2019 model inspired the racing version. It has taken Team Penske to four owners championships carried Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
