Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Friday continued slamming Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Kathua and Unnao rape cases, which have sparked nationwide protests and outrage, and questioned PM's silence.
Following Gandhi's protest, some PCC units too staged protests on Friday.
In J&K's Kathua, an eight-year-old girl from a Muslim nomadic community was gang raped and murdered while in UP's Unnao, a 17-year-old accused a BJPlegislator of rape.
In a separate tweet, the Congress party said: "It is shocking that the Yogi Govt has withdrawn a rape case against a former BJP minister". The issue concerns women and here we are joined by several parties and women.
Lashing out at the BJP BJP leaders for observing a fast to protest washout of Budget Session, the Congress said Modi is being silent at a time the country wants him to speak up against corruption, violence against women and farmers' distress. The government should ensure that the women of India feel safe.
Taking a dig at Modi government's "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" initiative, he said it was the right slogan and the prime minister must start working on "Beti Bachao". Ashok Gehlot, in-charge of the organisation said Congress units in every State will be holding candlelight vigils to highlight crimes against women.
Rahul Gandhi tweeted, "How can anyone protect the culprits of such evil?"
The J&K police's Crime Branch earlier this week filed two separate chargesheets against eight accused in the case in a court at Kathua in spite of resistance by a group of local lawyers.
Though the Kathua rape and murder took place in January, central politicians were largely silent until details in a police chargesheet revealed the sheer cruelty and horror that the child was subjected to before she was killed.
In another case, BJP lawmaker Kuldeep Singh Sengar has been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for allegedly raping a minor girl in Unnao town of the state.
