The shooter was identified as Austin Rollins, 17. Police eventually kicked in the locker room door, said Ziyanna Williams, a 14-year-old ninth-grader.
Cameron said the security officer fired a shot at Rollins, but it was not immediately clear if the officer struck the gunman or whether he had committed suicide. Investigators say deputy Blaine Gaskill, an armed school resource officer and former SWAT team member, responded within a minute, firing one round. It is still under investigation whether the officer's shot was what killed the gunman.
Gaskill's response was hailed as an example of exactly what a resource officer is supposed to do in such a circumstance, particularly when contrasted to the actions of the security officer in last month's shooting in Parkland, Florida. One said: "Lord, help the parents of the shooter to find hope and peace in you". Many students across the country are calling for effective gun controls, leading up to Saturday's March For Our Lives rally in the nation's capital against gun violence in schools.
In the Parkland shooting, school resource deputy Scot Peterson never entered the building after taking a position outside.
Local authorities released a photo of the school resource officer credited with stopping a school shooting in southeastern Maryland on Tuesday.
Sheriff Cameron said no "pre-incident signs" have been found on social media accounts connected to the suspect at this time.
Great Mills High School has an enrollment of just over 1,500 students, and the student body was about 56% minority students and had a four-year graduation rate of 91%, according to the school's 2015-16 improvement plan. "We're looking into the cost of ballistic glass, metal detectors, more cameras and more trained officers in our schools". The female student was taken to PG Shock Trauma, where she is in ICU with life-threatening critical injuries.
Authorities said a 16-year-old female student is fighting for her life in intensive care at Prince George's Hospital Center.
GREAT MILLS, Maryland - In the latest school shooting in America, the gunfire was over and done with in less than a minute. Another 14-year-old male student was also hit during the shooting. He added that the shooting should not halt the conversation on school safety, but rather "serve as a call to action".
"At least someone is doing their job", Stoneman Douglas student Tanzil Philip said.
The shooting, which came amid a renewed national debate over gun violence following a school massacre in Florida last month, occurred just before 8 a.m. local time at Great Mills High School in St. Mary's County, county Sheriff Timothy Cameron said. Governor Larry Hogan (R) addressed the situation offering his prayers for the families affected by the act of domestic terrorism, while reminding the American public that prayers are "not enough"; that action will continue to be quintessential in securing changes. Police said they obtained a search warrant that led to them finding semi-automatic rifles, handguns and other weapons, along with ammunition. Now, I can say: 'You think it wouldn't happen? "Great Mills is a wonderful school and somewhere I am proud to go".
Neighbors in a nearby community prayed for their friends and colleagues during a small vigil following a shooting at southern Maryland school.
