DuVernay will reportedly direct the big screen adaptation for DC's The New Gods, according to Deadline. The New Gods were created by legendary comic book icon Jack Kirby for DC Comics just after he left Marvel Comics where he was responsible for dozens of characters including Black Panther. The New Gods live on two warring planets, the Eden-like New Genesis and the hellish Apokolips, which is ruled by the evil Darkseid.
On Thursday, EW confirmed that DuVernay would direct upcoming DC superhero movie New Gods. When asked to name her favorite superhero on Twitter, she gave what came as a surprising answer to many: Big Barda, a New God and wife of Mister Miracle.
Ava DuVernay is stepping into the superhero realm. The Highfather rules New Genesis, often portrayed as a heavenly planet of paradise. The comic is part of the Fourth World Saga storyline, a series of four comic books all written and drawn by Kirby. Barda's abilities and take-charge attitude even allowed her to become the leader of the Female Furies, a ferocious and powerful group of warriors who served as the personal guard to Apokolips's tyrannical ruler, Darkseid.
