Following a domestic violence incident in Nob Hill last week, Oakland Raiders linebacker Aldon Smith pled not guilty in court on Monday.

Oakland still has a glaring need at cornerback, left with only Gareon Conley as a projected starter after releasing both David Amerson and Sean Smith. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team hadn't announced the move.

Former Los Angeles Rams tight end Derek Carrier will sign a three-year deal with the Oakland Raiders when free agency officially opens Wednesday, according to multiple media reports. It's also likely that Sean Smith's professional football career is now over. Smith was sentenced after entering his plea then taken into custody.

The longtime boyfriend of Smith's sister was trying to intervene in a dispute between the siblings, the prosecutor said.

The Mercury News' Rick Hurd and Matthias Gafni reported the victim identified herself as an ex-girlfriend of Smith's during a call with an emergency dispatcher.

Attorney Jonathan Dennis said Woods "felt the sentence, obviously, was not as strict as it should have been, but he's pleased he's admitting guilt". He reportedly suffered a severe right knee injury in December of 2015 but missed only part of 2016 and played in 14 games last season for the Rams.

Carrie is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday and is free to talk to potential suitors this week.
