European Union commissioner: We will stand up to 'trade war' bullies

Australia set to secure exemption from US tariffs

"[Turnbull] is committed to having a very fair and reciprocal military and trade relationship", Trump tweeted on Friday March 9.

"Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross will be speaking with representatives of the European Union about eliminating the large Tariffs and Barriers they use against the United States of America".

According to Malmstrom, the Trump administration is using trade "to threaten and intimidate" Europeans, and that trade has become "a scapegoat".

In a letter submitted to President Donald Trump, the Auto Care Association urged the administration to reconsider imposing tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum due to unintended negative consequences it may have on the USA economy and the auto care industry.

Tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, pending negotiations on exceptions, will take effect 15 days after the Thursday announcement on all countries except for Canada and Mexico, the first- and fourth-largest steel exporters to the United States.

The US tariff for cars, at 2.5 per cent, was lower than the European Union rate of 10 per cent, but its rate of up to 25 per cent on trucks was higher.

"We don't link together the tariffs and the negotiations for NAFTA, but we're happy to continue to move forward on the negotiations", he said in an interview on "Power Lunch".

While the tariffs are not expected to have a big impact on the USA or global economy, economists agreed that the risk of a trade war stemming from the move could have much bigger consequences.

Over the weekend, Mr Trump argued that the USA has been abused economically by the European Union, saying they were "wonderful countries who treat the U.S. very badly on trade".

Trudeau also said it was in part due to the hard work of Canadian officials that Trump exempted Canada from the tariffs last week.

The Commission said it expected to be in contact with Washington over the metals tariffs this week, but that no formal talks had been scheduled.

"On our end we are going to vigorously defend supply management", Couillard said, adding Quebec's farmers have already given up market share for other recently negotiated trade deals.

The EU trading bloc is seeking exemption from the tariffs.

Over the weekend, the bloc met with U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer to resolve the tariff row, but did not come to an agreement. She said: "The best option would be [for the EU] to be excluded".
