Last September, Nest officially announced that it was planning on updating its Cam IQ indoor security camera to add Google Assistant.

A cloud-powered camera is pretty cool, and with today's batch of updates, Nest is improving the Nest Aware service with two new features. You will, however, be able to use the Assistant on the Nest camera to start streaming music or podcasts to a Chromecast-enabled device.

Nest Cam IQ owners can install a free software update starting today to enable Google (GOOG, GOOGL) Assistant.

"It's already a best-in-class security camera with top-of-its-class smartsbrains", said Nest's Maxime Veron.

While the Assistant integration seems fairly complete, there doesn't appear to be any controls for controlling the Nest Cam IQ itself. So you can raise the temperature on your Nest thermostat by saying "OK Google, make it warmer". If you want to use it, you'll need to go into the Nest app's settings and choose "connect Google Assistant" to turn it on. On the down side, we noted that it's on the pricey side at $299, and many features require a Nest Aware subscription.

The company is also adding a $5 plan to its Nest Aware subscription service offering five days of 24/7 recording.

"To help protect your privacy and security, the Google Assistant is not included on any of our outdoor products such as Nest Cam IQ Outdoor", the company wrote in a support article.

Among other tweaks and upgrades, Nest new also claims to have made its Nest Aware alerts more intelligent. A $10 plan offers 10 days of nonstop surveillance; get 30 days for $30. Nest says it's also adding the ability for its cameras to distinguish human beings and objects in so-called Activity Zones, which are designated areas in your camera's line of sight where you suspect motion might occur.
