Trump just praised the White House aide accused of domestic abuse

Reince Priebus

"Hey Reince I gotta tell you- I miss you man! Please come back

WASHINGTON - President Trump said Friday that a former aide accused of domestic abuse by two ex-wives had done a "very good job" at the White House, adding, "We certainly wish him well".

Carroll, a White House lawyer who quietly became one of chief of staff John Kelly's deputies late previous year, is expected to be tapped to become the administration's drug czar as early as Friday, two sources with knowledge of the decision told CNN.

"He says he's innocent, and I think you have to remember that", Trump said.

President Trump was not told of the accusations until this week, two senior officials said, after they were first published by the Daily Mail, and he had grown fond of Porter in his job, which often put him by the president's side.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Senior Trump aides, starting with White House Counsel Donald F. McGahn II, have known about the abuse allegations for months. "But we absolutely wish him well", Trump continued. A background check for security clearance was in progress at the time of his resignation.

Asked on Thursday why so many White House officials were still operating on interim clearances, White House spokesman Raj Shah said he wasn't able to discuss specifics of the clearance process.

Porter, now dating Trump's reputed favorite aide Hope Hicks, was accused of punching and choking first wife Colbie Holderness earlier this week. Flynn's security clearance was suspended in February following his firing less than a month into the job amid concerns about his Russian contacts and comments to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, but weeks after the administration reportedly learned of his lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"I found out about it recently and I was surprised by it". One of the accounts included photos alleging to show the abuse.

Porter's first wife, Colbie Holderness, has accused him of throwing her down and punching her in the face during a trip to Florence in 2005 and provided photos showing her with a black eye.

During a staff meeting, Kelly told those in attendance to say he took action to remove Porter within 40 minutes of learning abuse allegations from two ex-wives were credible, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because discussions in such meetings are supposed to be confidential.

Per multiple reports, President Trump has been frustrated about this whole thing, and even apparently called Kelly's predecessor, Reince Priebus, to gripe about him. "And so we'll comment on any issues affecting White House staff when we get back to Washington", the vice president said.

Late Wednesday, Kelly released a statement claiming "new allegations" had swayed him.

Shah explained Kelly's change in opinion about the seriousness of the allegations by saying that Kelly wasn't "fully aware" of the allegations until Wednesday.

Christie told ABC News in a Wednesday podcast that Porter's name never came up when he was in charge of Trump's transition team. "The reality behind them is nowhere close to what is being described", he said in a statement announcing his resignation.
