Naveen congratulates Aanchal Thakur for winning India's 1st worldwide medal in Skiing

Aanchal Thakur bags bronze medal

Aanchal Thakur won a Bronze Medal in Skiing the first one for India

As reported by Times of India, Aanchal expressed herself after winning the medal and said, "Months of training have finally borne fruit". Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jai Ram Thakur, Union sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and the Congress party came out in support of the national icon.

She clinched the medal in the slalom race category.

Aanchal Thakur scripted history on Tuesday (January 9) when she bagged India's first-ever medal in global skiing. "At the end turkey served me well", Thakur captioned the tweet with multiple images of her podium finish. On Tuesday, 21-year-old Aanchal won this medal in a competition organized at PalanDoken Ski Center.

Aanchal is said to have learned skiing from her father, and later was trained by Olympian Heera Lal. "Wishing you the very best in your future endeavors", he tweeted. Papa always wanted me to ski and he has been spending out of his pocket all this while. Aanchal's achievement should also be celebrated by the government and every available facility should be provided to her as well. "I just want to say that we too are fighting, working hard day in and day out for India, like any other sportsperson", she added.

Roshan himself financed her daughter's skiing journey to global level and also revealed that ministry do not consider it as a sport.

Roshan Thakur, Aanchal's father and the secretary general of Winter Games Federation of India (WGFI), was elated.

While her brother Himanshu is closer to the qualification mark, making the Winter Games cut seems unlikely for Aanchal.

It is an expensive sport with the equipment, comprising ski, boots and clothing costing approximately Rs 5,00,000. I have to see if I can get the visa for that.

"Aanchal called me on WhatsApp and showed me the medal".
