The company claims that the futuristic Vivo in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone will offer an unprecedented mobile experience to users which is capable of defining a new era of mobile interaction, reports Gizbot.
The Verge, which was able to go hands-on with the Vivo's in-display fingerprint sensor, reported that the process of setting up a fingerprint and using it unlock the device is the same as with conventional sensors. The phone itself sports really thin bezels, and chances are that Synaptics actually partnered up with Vivo in order to show off its in-display fingerprint scanner, and Vivo created a phone for them, though it's still unclear what is the phone's name. This smartphone will be launched in the first half of this year. By launching the smartphone at CES 2018, Vivo will become the first company ever to launch a smartphone with fingerprint sensor underneath the display panel. It is also said to be scratch proof and waterproof since it is covered with a glass. The indicator that asks you to place a finger on it will be present for unlocking your phone, accessing protected content, or doing mobile payments that require biometric authentication, but other than that you can't really tell there's anything else but an OLED display there. The phone is also said to sport iPhone X-esque notch on the top.
We are pretty excited about this new tech and would certainly love to see more and more smartphones with in-display fingerprint scanning technology making it to the market this year. Apple however, completely removed the fingerprint scanner known as TouchID on iOS devices and is now relying on face recognition with the new FaceID feature. The upcoming smartphone in all likelihood will feature in-screen fingerprint sensor from Synaptics.
According to the senior VP at Vivo (Alex Feng), the device will provide a more comfortable authentication experience and it will be officially announced early 2018. Vivo says it will announce the availability of its first in-display fingerprint scanning smartphone in early 21018.
