Apprehended using security camera footage, Schenectady men Justin C. Mann, 24, and James W. White, 38, were arraigned Saturday in Troy City Court on several charges, including first-degree murder and second-degree murder. At a press conference held today, police say that they knew the victims but would not say how or discuss the motive because of the ongoing investigation.
"After being in this business for nearly 42 years I can't describe the savagery of a person like this", Police Chief John Tedesco said this week as police searched for the killer. Tedesco says he has "never seen savagery like this" in 42 years in law enforcement.
From the beginning, police, who have not provided details about the deaths, described the case as a horrific crime.
A GoFundMe campaign has been created to set up a scholarship and provide resources for Isaiah Smith, Myers' surviving 16-year-old son.
Tedesco said that he's "confident" there will not be any more arrests in this case.
The family was killed in their Troy apartment on December 21, but not discovered until five days later, after relatives grew concerned over unreturned phone calls.
Both Mann and White have a criminal records. It's inconceivable, ' said Pastor Jackie Robinson Sr. of the Oak Grove Baptist Church.
'I'm scared to go to the corner store, ' he told reporters.
Jeremiah, the family said, dreamed of playing for the Boston Celtics.
Brandi Mells, 22, was Shanta Myers' girlfriend. The Troy City School District, partnering with the Boys and Girls Club, planned to offer grief counseling Friday morning at Troy Middle School.
