McCain's Absence Probably Won't Hurt The GOP's Tax Bill Vote

McCain to Miss Pivotal Senate Tax Vote After Chemotherapy Complications

Republican Sen. John McCain has returned home to Arizona, where he plans to stay until January, after he was hospitalized over side effects from treatment of brain cancer, the senator's office announced Sunday.

His daughter, Meghan McCain, took to Twitter on Sunday saying that she is excited to spend Christmas with her dad in Arizona.

Sen. McCain is not expected to be in Washington for the tax vote, CNN confirmed. "Senator McCain has returned to Arizona and will undergo physical therapy and rehabilitation at Mayo Clinic", the statement said.

"Senator McCain has responded well to treatment he received at Walter Reed Medical Center for a viral infection and continues to improve".

Mr McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in July, after doctors found a blood clot over his left eye during a check-up.

President Trump told reporters at the White House Sunday afternoon that he spoke to McCain's wife, Cindy. "He looks forward to returning to Washington in January", McCain's office said.

The bill, which would cut corporate and individual taxes, has been criticised for largely benefiting the wealthy. And it's too bad.

"But he will come back if we need his vote".

On Friday, Republicans released the final version of the GOP tax bill that, if passed, will be a big win for President Donald Trump's administration. "But he will come back if we need his vote".

This week, the GOP will try to pass a sweeping $1.5 trillion tax package in the Senate with a razor-thin majority and all Democrats opposed to the legislation.

A vote is expected in the House and Senate on Tuesday. Then again, two of the Republicans senators who had been most outspoken in their opposition to the bill have recently changed their tune - Senators Bob Corker of Tennessee and Marco Rubio of Florida. "They've headed back [to Arizona]", Trump said. He suffered a minor tear in his right Achilles tendon, forcing him to wear a walking brace.
