Elton John has taken to social media to share the heartbreaking news of his mother's death, saying he is "in shock" over her sudden passing. "I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock", he wrote in the caption.

Elton John's mum, Sheila Farebrother, has passed away.

Elton confirmed that he and his mother were still in touch as he said he had only seen her last Monday. Thank you for everything.

Sir Elton and his mother initially fell out in 2008 after she allegedly refused his request not to talk to two of their oldest friends. So happy we are back in touch.

Ms Farebrother was 92 years old.

However, in February this year, John announced that he rekindled his relationship with his mother. "Love, Elton (sic)" Elton and Sheila had patched up their relationship in May after nearly nine years of not speaking to each other.

Taking to Instagram to announce the news, Elton shared a snap of himself and his mum.

Farebrother's cause of death is not immediately known. "I look after her, but I don't want her in my life".

The Sun said: "Elton ... failed to show up to his stepfather's funeral in 2010 and Sheila furthered the feud by hiring an Elton John tribute act for her 90th birthday party".

"I don't know [if watching me reminds her of her son]".

I am so sorry for your loss Elton.

Fans and celebrities offered their condolences including singer and actress Betty Buckley who offered her condolences.

No doubt John is grateful for the time he was able to spend with his mother before it was too late.

The infection was described by experts as "rare" and "potentially deadly", and all concerts from his Million Dollar Piano tour during April and May were cancelled.
