But this time after he blasted the news network, CNN fought back in a tweet that drew twice as many retweets and tens of thousands of more Twitter likes as the president's rant.

United States President Donald Trump took a break from golf to back his favourite cable news station and bash the network he finds most damaging.

"They (CNN International) represent our Nation to the WORLD very poorly". However, examples of the pro-Trump website's work can still be seen on its Twitter account. Again, there is "nothing fake about that". However, Times was prompt to deny the report.

Comey responded, indirectly, on social media. If they can't do their job, then dictators will not be held accountable. Norm Eisen, a former chief White House ethics lawyer, suggested that the president's words might hurt his Justice Department's legal case against the AT&T merger with CNN's parent company, Time Warner Inc.

Russian president Vladimir Putin recently signed a law that will make foreign media outlets like CNN International register as "foreign agents".

"'Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that can not be limited without being lost.' - Thomas Jefferson, Jan. 28, 1786", he tweeted.

Comey, arguably one of FBI's most controversial directors, has been criticized, particularly by Trump, for leaking information to the press.

Sure, Fox News might still be the most watched news network in America - but the responses to the president's attack on CNN show that many deeply respect the global reporting delivered by the news channel.
