It's a pretty useful change, considering previously, Maps would be filled with identical blue-colored icons for stores, cafes, and doctor's offices. Specific categories of locations will now have their own color scheme, and new icons will be used to better identify the type of location. And as it changes, Google Maps changes with it.

Google has announced a new look for Google Maps that features an updated color scheme and new icons.
Google Maps is designed for the iPhone and all iPad models. For example, if you're in a new neighborhood and searching for a coffee shop, you could open the map to find the nearest orange icon (which is the color for Food & Drink spots). Google Maps will now show new updates happening around a user including closing of a road, opening and closing time of a business and local events.
The internet giant has promised to roll out this new Google Maps design to all Google products in the next few weeks, with Android Auto, Android, Google Assistant, Google Earth, and Google Search receiving it first.
