But it's historically been the case gamers care less about whether SSAO is implemented in a tiny smartphone screen, and more about whether they can play Angry Birds, Flappy Bird, or Minecraft.
After plenty of leaks and speculation the all-new Razer Phone was finally unveiled at a major event last night.
South Africans may have a hard time getting their hands on a Razer Phone. It shouldn't come as a big surprise, since Razer acquired the start-up earlier this year. The LCD on the Razer Phone doesn't appear to have that problem.
"It's common knowledge that I'm obsessed with my smartphones, I play a ton of games on them, and they're my go-to for streaming content", said Razer Co-Founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan. It has no headphone jack but there's a THX-certified adapter for the USB-C port, which will convert to 24-bit digital sound.
Now let's talk about the display. Because this phone has a insane 120Hz refresh rate and needs to play back games at 120 frames per second. When the battery level is high you get smooth as silk visuals in video and games and when the battery level gets lower the refresh rate is clocked down to conserve battery. Now it's a distinct reality, and at $US699, the new gaming-focused Razer Phone could one day be a solid alternative for people exhausted of slick glass-backed OLED phones like the iPhone X and Galaxy S8.
Along with its gaming credentials, the Razer Phone features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, 8GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage which is expandable. The front sports an 8-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture.
The Razer Phone has Android 7.1, which will be updated to Oreo in Q1 2018, with the customisable Nova Launcher on top.
The Razer Phone will be available in the United Kingdom exclusively on Three, which is already supposed to be taking pre-orders, although the company hadn't got round to updating its website at the time of writing. The device is available to purchase right now in US, UK and Europe.
"We worked with some of the top people in the world, so we got a propriety screen designed specifically for us, for gamers". In the UK, Three has confirmed that it will be selling the handset soon. The phone is complete with the company's tri-snake logo stamped prominently on the back.
