On Thursday, the new Polestar revealed its future as a standalone electric performance brand. It was later taken over by Volvo Cars to make performance road cars for the company. However, as the developers say, the new auto is only half consists of parts of old Volvo models.
Considering Polestar is technically a new company part of the Geely-owner Volvo Car Group, it can't really afford the luxury of introducing what would turn out to be a niche model, but there's no harm in imagining a convertible body style, right?
The Polestar 1 is a two-door, four-seater coupe with a hybrid power plant. The Polestar 1 is the flawless example of this collaboration, with around half of the components coming from Volvo, including the SPA architecture, and the rest being entirely new and bespoke technology created by Polestar engineers. Weight is distributed within a 48:52 front-rear ratio. There will be no Polestar dealers - and no Polestar cars in the corner of a Volvo showroom - but there will be Polestar retail "spaces". Polestar expects that most customers would use the vehicle in electric mode only for most of the trips.
Customers will be able to buy Polestar models via an online subscription, the same system that Geely has already announced it will be using for its Lynk & Co brand.
The Polestar 1 will arrive in 2019, with numbers to be capped at just 500 units per year due to its finicky carbon fiber-intensive production process. "They even directly pointed out this competition with Elon Musk's EV company in the press release, saying, "[The Polestar 2] will be a mid-sized BEV, joining the competition around the Tesla Model 3". The sporty hybrid GT, a major step toward Volvo Car Group's first all-electric car, shares its basic Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) with the latest Volvo vehicles. A single monthly payment will streamline related expenses like insurance and maintenance, and Polestar will offer pick-up/drop-off servicing for when it's time for that oil change or tire rotation. Polestar will also provide additional services including concierge and on-demand services for customers at an added charge.
