The IOC Evaluation Commission confirmed on Monday that the City of Angels is ready to deliver a sustainable, low-risk new Games for a new era, with long-term benefits for LA and the Olympic and Paralympic Movements, said LA 2028 in a press release, reports Xinhua news agency. This result came after a year's worth of scrambling by International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach, who had only the two bidders left for the original prize, 2024, and couldn't afford to see either lose.
"This historic double allocation is a'win-win-win' situation for the city of Paris, the city of Los Angeles and the IOC", said IOC President Thomas Bach following the vote to approve the decision.
The vote, in addition to setting the Olympic schedule for 11 years, breaks the IOC's tradition of selecting host cities one at a time.
For Paris, however, the wait has been considerably longer.
"Paris and LA are two great world cities with exceptional Games plans, and they will provide unforgettable stages for sport".
For the first time in modern Olympics history, the International Olympic Committee announced two host locations at once Wednesday: Paris in 2024 and Los Angeles in 2028. "We're two great cities, it's two great Olympic hosts and it's going to be two great games".
With the blessing of the 130th IOC Session that met in Lausanne in July, the IOC, Los Angeles, Paris and their National Olympic Committees have been working together in order to reach the agreement that was ratified by the IOC Session today. It also will be the first time the Summer Games are held on American soil since the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
The Paris Games will come on the 100th anniversary of its last turn.
The IOC selected Tokyo to host the next Summer Olympics, in 2020.
LA has also hosted the Games twice before, in 1932 and 1984, and its 2028 edition has the motto "Follow the Sun".
The Olympic body, however, was eager to secure the future of its prime product after Boston, Budapest, Rome and Hamburg all pulled the plug on their 2024 bids mid-race.
The two cities are getting the hosting rights without the usual dramatic vote.
That leaves only the presentations by Paris and Los Angeles, and then a vote to confirm both bids.
"I could not be more happy", he said after the first double allocation since 1921, when Paris won the 1924 and Amsterdam the 1928 Games.
Both the 2014 winter Games in Russia's Sochi and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics were mired in controversy over corruption, embezzlement and doping allegations, dealing a major blow to the reputations of the event and the IOC.
