5 dead after air conditioning issue forces evacuation of South Florida nursing home

Memorial Regional Hospital is yards away from the nursing home. Patients were treated for dehydration, breathing difficulties and other heat-related ills, authorities said.

Larkin Community Hospital, which is adjacent to the retirement home, was also being evacuated. He didn't answer questions regarding whether a generator was running inside the place.

"I am absolutely heartbroken to learn of news reports of the deaths of multiple individuals in a nursing home in Broward Count, he said".

The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills is not part of the Memorial Healthcare System. It never reported losing power during the storm.

Five people have died at a South Florida nursing home that lost power due to Hurricane Irma.

The state corporate registration for The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, LLC lists South Miami Dr. Jack Michel - the president, director and agent of Larkin Community Hospital - as the company's manager.

Early previous year Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills only had a temporary generator and couldn't describe plans to replace it with a permanent generator, according to records from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The family members requested the restraining order to make sure information from computers, medical records, emails, and text messages are preserved from the Lake Arthur Place nursing home.

At the time, Michel was investigated by a plethora of agencies, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Office of Inspector General, the Florida Medicaid Fraud Unit and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The air conditioning was out, but Chief Sanchez said it remained under investigation whether power was entirely cut. They did not say whether the facility had air conditioning when paramedics were called early Wednesday morning. "We're going to get this state rebuilt".

Flora Mitchell arrived at the home trying to find out what happened to her 58-year-old sister, Vonda Wilson, a stroke patient who lived there for about 10 years.

"There are numerous bridges of support that have to be inspected before we can put commodities down the roadway to support citizens", Brock told CNN.

In an online statement, Florida Gov. Rick Scott pledged to investigate through local law enforcement and state agencies. The Associated Press reported that before the deaths at the Hollywood nursing home, Irma was blamed for a combined 19 fatalities in Florida, Georgia and SC. "Protecting the lives of Floridians is my top priority and that's why we have worked all week to help Floridians prepare and respond to Hurricane Irma", Scott said.

Police have started a criminal investigation into the deaths.

A state official eventually said they found a generator and gas, but it was not needed: The power turned back on. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were affected.

Police and fire crews began evacuating the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills on Wednesday morning. When tornadoes ripped across Alabama in 2011, they flattened an assisted-living centre, tore through a brand-new senior housing complex and ripped apart a nursing home, where four dozen residents massed in hallways, praying as trees crashed down and a cloud of dust rained upon them.

At least 10 in Cuba were also dead from Irma, which was the first Category 4 landfall in Florida since 2004.
