Rajnath Singh begins 4-day J & K visit today

Governor N N Vohra, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and senior officials from civil administration, police, CRPF and intelligence agencies attended the meeting.

Earlier, delegations of various national and regional parties called on the Union Home Minister.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said on Sunday Union home minister Rajanth Singh rushed to the state only after the Congress announced its schedule.

Rajnath said that keeping in mind the safety of police personnel who were working in a challenging environment, he has ordered for bullet proof vehicles at all police stations in J&K. He said it will create jobs for the people of J&K.

Singh, later in the day, will also interact with the personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) who have been in the forefront of the anti-terrorist operations in Anantnag. The total cost of PMDP is Rs 80,068 crores that includes 63 projects. He, however, alleged that the day PDP-BJP government took over the state affairs, the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has worsened.

Singh's in visit is considered a follow-up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech in which he had sounded a fresh reach-out to the people of the Kashmir Valley. The former Prime Minister is scheduled to assess the security scenario and have interaction with cross section of people as leader of the Congress Panel on Kashmir. The separatists refused to open gates for a detachment of parliamentary delegation that sought to meet them.

Terrorist attacked another army vehicle near Imam Sahib in Shopian district of South Kashmir on Saturday evening. "Had they moved normally like passengers, we would have no problem in allowing them [to head for Delhi]", Inspector-General of Police, Kashmir, Muneer Khan said.

"But there are some militants, who only want militancy and nothing else", Singh said exuding confidence in cops, "(they) call for Jihad for Jannah (heaven)".
