Iran's air defenses have forced an approaching USA spy plane and a reconnaissance drone to change course near its air space over the past six months, a military official was quoted as saying on Sunday. The U2 incident happened on March 21, with the pilot turning the plane around after a warning from the Iranians, he said.
Iran has repeatedly announced such activities over the past few years to demonstrate the capabilities of its armed forces.
Ayatollah Khamenei lauded coordinated efforts made by the Iranian Army and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) through the Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base and also praised the base's cooperation with Iran's Defense Ministry, universities and other scientific centers to overcome the existing shortages.
'The S-300 and Bavar-373 systems will be highly lethal for the enemy, ' the Iranian commander added.
General Esmayeeli said that Iran will put into operation its home-made version of the sophisticated Russian S-300 missile defense system, dubbed as Bavar (Belief) 373, in the near future, adding that the two systems play complementary roles for each other. "All of its subsystems have been completed and its missile tests have been conducted".
Russian Federation resumed the sale following the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers which lifted sanctions, and Iran's S-300 defense system became operational in March.
Noting that the new radars are also certainly capable of tracking and intercepting micro-scale flying objects, he said, 'Our electromagnetic radars can trace several targets simultaneously and transmit their information to fire control systems'.
It may be mentioned that Iranian Defence Minister Amir Hatami said this week that Iran is working to boost its missile power. Based on new developments, it appears that the Obama sanctions had little or no adverse effect on the Iranian missile program.
