Bottas, who has won two races and finished on the podium in the last five, was less upbeat than Hamilton. "I knew the record was on the horizon, and at some stage I would get the 68th pole. I was waiting for him to make a mistake, he didn't." stated the German.

"It's a no-brainer as it stands for next year to continue with Valtteri", the Austrian told reporters at the Belgian Grand Prix after Ferrari confirmed Sebastian Vettel had signed a three-year contract extension. "I have always admired him". "I am very disappointed for the fans who buy an expensive ticket to watch".

Sebastian Vettel says he had a "really close" fight with Lewis Hamilton at Spa, one that shows that Ferrari have made strides forward.

"I think it's highly unlikely that [Seb] will be here", said Hamilton.

While Hamilton and Vettel were not engaged in much direct battling on-track, the Ferrari driver enjoyed going toe-to-toe with his championship rival.

Kimi Raikkonen was left fourth after an error on his final lap in Q3 followed by Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo.

Ferrari had been expected to struggle at Spa given the similarities with Silverstone, another high-speed circuit, giving Vettel a boost after proving the critics wrong.

Vettel said: "I love this team, I love the people working for this brand". I do know we are the best equipped as we've ever been to deal with a scenario like that.

"In Abu Dhabi, just before he retired, I plucked up the courage to ask him if he would swap helmets with me, so that is definitely one of the coolest things I have in my house".

"It's nearly insane to think I've reached Michael's record, a fantastic milestone".

"It works [with Valtteri] so I don't think any of the bosses or any individual in the team is unhappy with what is now in place so I find it hard to believe they would change that. We get on very well together, so hopefully it all stays the same as it is now". "I still feel young at heart - so it's good. It was very hard to follow in the middle sector, but we stayed close, then we benefitted a little bit in the first and the last sector, but overall the auto was very good".

He clocked a best lap in one minute and 44.753 seconds to finish 0.262sec ahead of Raikkonen who marked the confirmation of his Ferrari contract for 2018 with a speedy showing in Belgium.

"The balance of the vehicle has been feeling really good, just lacking overall grip and losing a lot of time in high speed corners".
