Blues boss Antonio Conte is looking to bolster his options after selling Nemanja Matic

Danny Drinkwater emerged as a target for Chelsea this week as Antonio Conte looks to further bolster his squad ahead of the start of the season.

The midfielder has also been recognised at global level after breaking into the England set-up and it appears he's now being lined-up for a big-money move to the defending league champions.

Drinkwater was on Chelsea's radar 12 months ago following Conte's appointment at Stamford Bridge, but the Italian decide against signing him after landing Drinkwater's former team-mate N'Golo Kante for £32m instead.

Antonio Conte is understood to be keen on adding another midfielder to his ranks this summer after allowing Nemanja Matic to join Manchester United, with Drinkwater a leading candidate.

The 27-year-old signed a new contract earlier last year and made a commitment till 2021.

Chelsea are looking to complete the signing of Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater, Goal can confirm.

The sales of both Matic and Nathaniel Chalobah have left the Premier League champions short of options in the middle of the park, despite the arrival of Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco.

The Blues are also being linked with Everton's Ross Barkley in that position, while Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Juventus' Alex Sandro remain priorities for the wing-back positions.

Drinkwater was a vital component to the King Power stadium-based side's unprecedented 2015/16 Premier League title triumph, and featured prominently for them last term too despite the poor defence of their league crown.
