The demonstration was in response to the widespread jailings and dismissals authorised by the Turkish government after last year's failed coup attempt.
None of that mattered during the three-and-a-half months she was in jail.
Turkey does not see the European Union (EU) as "indispensable" and the country will find it "comforting" if the organisation says Ankara can not be accepted as a member, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.
Erdogan has directly appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Gulen's extradition to Turkey, but U.S. officials have stated that Turkey has yet to provide enough evidence for the Justice Department to act.
"Accusations against me related to the coup attempt are baseless, politically motivated slanders", Gulen, who lives at a compound in rural Pennsylvania, said in a statement.
The Turkish President said country was 'able to stand on its own two feet'.
Green Party MP Carl Schlyter has said: "If [Erdogan] is hindered from roaming around in Europe and influencing European countries the way he wants, then I hope that this will affect his politics". "I replied that they were not journalists, but spies and provocateurs", added Erdogan. "They don't think the EU's approach to Turkey is honest", he stressed. And now we are told to lift the emergency state.
Ankara has effectively ostracized Germany and other European Union member states, which decry the developments over the past year as reason enough to halt talks on its decades-old application to join the 28-member bloc.
"What we need at the anniversary of the coup attempt is not sympathy for coup-plotters and members of terrorist organisations as well as biased and groundless criticism but more cooperation, dialogue and understanding".
