Fresh Kid Ice, one of the founding members of rap group 2 Live Crew, has died early Thursday in Miami at age 53, according to multiple media reports. The trio them hooked up with Luther Campbell when they signed with his recording label. He added, "We lost a legend".
Ice, widely recognized as the first prominent Asian rapper, was famously arrested in Florida for performing tracks from 2 Live Crew's hit third album, As Nasty as They Wanna Be, in 1990 at a club. On Instagram, the rap artist also shared an image of Fresh Kid smiling with the same mournful caption.
Fresh, born Chris Wong Won in Trinidad and Tobago, was renowned as one of the major rappers of Asian descent in hip-hop.
Fresh Kid Ice formed 2 Live Crew in 1984 with DJ Mr. Mixx and Amazing Vee.
