Fresh Kid Ice, one of the founding members of rap group 2 Live Crew, has died early Thursday in Miami at age 53, according to multiple media reports. The trio them hooked up with Luther Campbell when they signed with his recording label. He added, "We lost a legend".

Ice, widely recognized as the first prominent Asian rapper, was famously arrested in Florida for performing tracks from 2 Live Crew's hit third album, As Nasty as They Wanna Be, in 1990 at a club. On Instagram, the rap artist also shared an image of Fresh Kid smiling with the same mournful caption.

Fresh, born Chris Wong Won in Trinidad and Tobago, was renowned as one of the major rappers of Asian descent in hip-hop.

Fresh Kid Ice formed 2 Live Crew in 1984 with DJ Mr. Mixx and Amazing Vee.

Brother Marquis (Mark Ross) joined the group for their debut album, "The 2 Live Crew Is What We Are". Other people could be like, 'Damn, that could be me.

Fresh Kid Ice was the only member to appear on every 2 Live Crew album.

The rapper, who served four years in the Air Force before entering the music world, went on to form his own record label, Chinaman Records. In 2004, he released Freaky Chinese, which notably featured several appearances from a pre-fame Flo Rida.

'The Asians were there in the beginning of hip-hop - but as DJs, ' he said.

He was involved in a auto crash in 1988 and suffered a stroke on Thanksgiving in 2008. The incidents impaired his speech and movement, but he eventually taught himself how to walk and talk again.
